Peng You (Friends)

I'm currently and continually learning how to speak Mandarin. I'm not much for learning a language in a classroom but I find Youtube very helpful to learn a language quicker as your brain retains things better with visuals and sound using videos and songs with English subtitles. I came accross this famous and well known song from China when I first organized a Mandarin meetup group on Meetup.com.  I remembered a Caucasian lady named Katherine who was quite fluent in Mandarin shared this song in the video below. Till this day, I've always remembered the melody and the lyrics. She was absolutely inspiring as she spoke Mandarin so well and was very helpful volunteering her time to teach others and using creative ways to teach the language. This group still continues to meet up regularly. It's quite a large group of sometimes 10-20 people that usually meets up a once or a few times a month. Great way to make new friends and learn a language at the same time!

This is simple song to learn. The lyrics are very the meaningful. It's about being friends till the end.

Don't Give Up! - An Inspirational Story

Derek Redmond shows a great inspiring story on not giving up!

During his career, he held the British record for the 400 metres sprint, and won gold medals in the 4x400 metres relay at the World Championships, European Championships and Commonwealth Games.

His career was blighted by a series of injuries, and he is best remembered for his performance at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona where he tore his hamstring in the 400 metres semi-final but fought through the pain and, with assistance from his father, managed to complete a full lap of the track as the crowd gave him a standing ovation. The incident has become a well-remembered moment in Olympic history, having been the subject of one of the International Olympic Committee's 'Celebrate Humanity' video.

The Story & Voice of Sung-Bong Choi

Have you heard the story of Sung-Bong Choi?

Abandoned in an orphanage at three years old, Choi ran away from the orphanage at five years old after being beaten by the adults there. He lived "on the streets of Korea" for ten years, selling chewing gum and energy drinks. Although he did not attend elementary school or junior high school, Choi took the Korean equivalent of a GED test. He graduated from Daejeon Arts High School for the arts, but could not continue with any professional training because of his financial situation.

Choi was inspired to pursue a musical career at an early age when he heard a nightclub singer performing with great sincerity. He began teaching himself to sing. This later led to classical vocal training at the prestigious Dae Jun Vocal Department at the performing arts high school he attended.

He loves singing and performed a stunning, touching audition at Korean's Got talent. His video (singing Nella Fantasia by Ennio Morricone) has been viewing by millions of people all around the world.

Choi said: "I just want to be like a normal person. I don't sing that well but when I do sing, I feel like a different person."

It's amazing what hidden talent some people have even when they are not fortunate to have come from a decent past/home. Some people do not know how lucky they are until they hear stories such as this truely amazing person.

Check out his beautiful voice and even more so, his inspiring story. Make sure you have some kleenex's nearby!

Lyrics - Italian version:
Nella fantasia io vedo un mondo giusto,
Lì tutti vivono in pace e in onestà.
Io sogno d'anime che sono sempre libere,
Come le nuvole che volano,
Pien d'umanità in fondo all'anima.

Pien d'umanità in fondo all'anima
English version:
In my imagination I see a right world
where everybody lives in peace and honesty
I dream of souls always free
like clouds which fly
full of humanity deep inside

in my imagination I see a clear world
the night is less dark over there

I dream of souls always free
like clouds which fly full of humanity

In the imagination there is a hot wind
which blows on cities, as a friend
I dream of souls always free
like clouds which fly
full of humanity deep inside
