100 Year Old Completing a Full 42.2K Marathon

As a runner myself, I had to post this story...

Fauja Singh at age 100, finished Toronto's waterfront marathon Sunday evening October 16, 2011. He only started running marathons at age 89! This absolutely goes to show you that you are never too old to start! How inspiring is that?!?

Running had helped him overcome his adversity of a tragic death of his wife and son. This is his 8th marathon and he has made history as the oldest person to complete a full marathon.

Click on the following link for more news information:
http://www.cbc.ca/sports/trackandfield/story/2011/10/16/sp-singh-100-marathon-toronto.html

Ever since I've started running, it has improved my life for the better both physically and mentally. All I can say is, get out there and do some form of exercise regularly! You won't regret it!

A Marathon Story

I love running these days. I still run at least 10K a week. However, this is not a story about running a marathon...it's about purpose, passion, and pursuit. After this video, ask yourself, what would you do if you weren't afraid?

When a Swallow Falls...

Here  a female mate is injured and the condition is soon fatal.

She was hit by a car as she swooped low across the road.

Here he brought her food  and attended to her  with love and  compassion.

He brought her  food again, but was shocked to find her  dead.

Aware that his  sweetheart is dead and will  never come back to him  again, He cries with adoring  love.

He stood beside  her, saddened of her  death.
Finally aware she  would never return to him, he stayed beside her body
chirping out his sadness and  sorrow.

Millions of people cried  after seeing these photos in America, Europe, Australia ,and even India .

The photographer sold these pictures for a nominal fee to the most famous newspaper in France.

All copies of that edition were sold out on the day these pictures were published.

And many people think animals don't have brains or feelings?

You have just witnessed Love and Sorrow felt by God's creatures

The Bible says God knows when a sparrow falls. How much more He cares for us.

Grace is God reaching down.

It's all about Attitude!

“The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failure, than successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company... a church... a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice everyday regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past... we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me and 90% of how I react to it. And so it is with you...we are in charge of our Attitudes.”

Random Acts of Kindness

I found a cool website that keeps a database of people randomly submitting ideas of random acts of kindness. Check it out! It could make a difference someones life or inspire someone.

Here are a few examples below from the site.

Read to a Child
Giving your full attention to children is a simple way to show them they are loved. Reading together can also be a very relaxing way to bond with a child you care about.

Write a Letter to Someone Who Made a Difference in Your Life

"At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us." -Albert Schweitzer.

Inspiring Quotes - Live Life

Live life fully while you're here. Experience everything. Take care of yourself and your friends. Have fun, be crazy, be weird. Go out and screw up! You're going to anyway, so you might as well enjoy the process. Take the opportunity to learn from your mistakes: find the cause of your problem and eliminate it. Don't try to be perfect; just be an excellent example of being human.

Smile Song

I love the lyrics by Nat King Cole's Smile song. It's so important to keep smiling throughout your life!
Nat King Cole Lyrics - Smile

Smile though your heart is aching
Smile even though its breaking
When there are clouds in the sky, you'll get by
If you smile through your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
Youll see the sun come shining through for you

Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear may be ever so near
Thats the time you must keep on trying
Smile, whats the use of crying?
Youll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile.
Thats the time you must keep on trying
Smile, whats the use of crying?
Youll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile

Sunset at the North Pole

This is one of the rarest pictures that you will ever see in your life when the moon was closet to the earth. The date the picture was taken was Thursday March 13th, 2011.

This is the sunset at the North Pole with the moon at its closest point .
a scene you will probably never get to see in person,
so take a moment and enjoy God at work at the North Pole.
And, you also see the sun below the moon, an amazing photo and not one easily
duplicated. You may want to pass it on to others so they can enjoy it.
you have an obligation to share it with others!'

Peng You (Friends)

I'm currently and continually learning how to speak Mandarin. I'm not much for learning a language in a classroom but I find Youtube very helpful to learn a language quicker as your brain retains things better with visuals and sound using videos and songs with English subtitles. I came accross this famous and well known song from China when I first organized a Mandarin meetup group on Meetup.com.  I remembered a Caucasian lady named Katherine who was quite fluent in Mandarin shared this song in the video below. Till this day, I've always remembered the melody and the lyrics. She was absolutely inspiring as she spoke Mandarin so well and was very helpful volunteering her time to teach others and using creative ways to teach the language. This group still continues to meet up regularly. It's quite a large group of sometimes 10-20 people that usually meets up a once or a few times a month. Great way to make new friends and learn a language at the same time!

This is simple song to learn. The lyrics are very the meaningful. It's about being friends till the end.

Don't Give Up! - An Inspirational Story

Derek Redmond shows a great inspiring story on not giving up!

During his career, he held the British record for the 400 metres sprint, and won gold medals in the 4x400 metres relay at the World Championships, European Championships and Commonwealth Games.

His career was blighted by a series of injuries, and he is best remembered for his performance at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona where he tore his hamstring in the 400 metres semi-final but fought through the pain and, with assistance from his father, managed to complete a full lap of the track as the crowd gave him a standing ovation. The incident has become a well-remembered moment in Olympic history, having been the subject of one of the International Olympic Committee's 'Celebrate Humanity' video.

The Story & Voice of Sung-Bong Choi

Have you heard the story of Sung-Bong Choi?

Abandoned in an orphanage at three years old, Choi ran away from the orphanage at five years old after being beaten by the adults there. He lived "on the streets of Korea" for ten years, selling chewing gum and energy drinks. Although he did not attend elementary school or junior high school, Choi took the Korean equivalent of a GED test. He graduated from Daejeon Arts High School for the arts, but could not continue with any professional training because of his financial situation.

Choi was inspired to pursue a musical career at an early age when he heard a nightclub singer performing with great sincerity. He began teaching himself to sing. This later led to classical vocal training at the prestigious Dae Jun Vocal Department at the performing arts high school he attended.

He loves singing and performed a stunning, touching audition at Korean's Got talent. His video (singing Nella Fantasia by Ennio Morricone) has been viewing by millions of people all around the world.

Choi said: "I just want to be like a normal person. I don't sing that well but when I do sing, I feel like a different person."

It's amazing what hidden talent some people have even when they are not fortunate to have come from a decent past/home. Some people do not know how lucky they are until they hear stories such as this truely amazing person.

Check out his beautiful voice and even more so, his inspiring story. Make sure you have some kleenex's nearby!

Lyrics - Italian version:
Nella fantasia io vedo un mondo giusto,
Lì tutti vivono in pace e in onestà.
Io sogno d'anime che sono sempre libere,
Come le nuvole che volano,
Pien d'umanità in fondo all'anima.

Pien d'umanità in fondo all'anima
English version:
In my imagination I see a right world
where everybody lives in peace and honesty
I dream of souls always free
like clouds which fly
full of humanity deep inside

in my imagination I see a clear world
the night is less dark over there

I dream of souls always free
like clouds which fly full of humanity

In the imagination there is a hot wind
which blows on cities, as a friend
I dream of souls always free
like clouds which fly
full of humanity deep inside

Only Hope - Song

Some people's voices are so amazing along with inspirational and meaningful lyrics. Listening to music like this can change your day.

There's a song that's inside of my soul.
It's the one that I've tried to write over and over again
I'm awake in the infinite cold.
But you sing to me over and over and over again.

So, I lay my head back down.
And I lift my hands and pray
To be only yours, I pray, to be only yours
I know now you're my only hope.

Sing to me the song of the stars.
Of your galaxy dancing and laughing and laughing again.
When it feels like my dreams are so far
Sing to me of the plans that you have for me over again.

So I lay my head back down.
And I lift my hands and pray
To be only yours, I pray, to be only yours
I know now, you're my only hope.

I give you my destiny.
I'm giving you all of me.
I want your symphony, singing in all that I am
At the top of my lungs, I'm giving it back.

So I lay my head back down.
And I lift my hands and pray
To be only yours, I pray, to be only yours
I pray, to be only yours
I know now you're my only hope.

Finish Strong is more than a statement, it's an attitude. It's an attitude of believing you can do something and having the courage and determination to see it through. And of course, you can apply this "finish strong attitude" to your business or your life!
Finish Strong is filled with amazing stories about people from all walks of life who, in the face of adversity, against all odds...finished strong!
There is one thing that we all have in common. That is...at some point in our life, we will face adversity. It's not a matter of if but...when.

My Running Journey

So I did it! I completed my first full marathon! It was the most perfect weather for running. Sunny with yet a cool breeze....it was almost meant to be because the next day was pouring rain! The experience running that distance was absolutely amazing with the scenic route, the crowds cheering, the volunteers and signs of encouragement really helped keep me going even though my thighs, calves and feet felt like they could go no further at times.

Running has become a part of my life that has inspired me in many ways. This running journey has yet to come to an end and probably won't.  It has improved my health, my strength mentally and physically, created ever lasting friendships, accomplished goals, motivated myself and others...and so much more but most of all, I've enjoyed the journey. Thought I'd document my running journey in a video to look back at my memories and maybe even inspire you in some way.

Special thanks to my running buddies who made it happen to acheive my first full marathon!

Yvonne Huyhn
Mike Sato
Trevor Kwok
Denis Chen

To  Shaun Lockwood that made it special to be there on my race day and helped capture our precious
moments.  And to all of you who have supported me throughout my  running journey with
encouraging  comments on Facebook, Twitter , directly & in spirit. Its been absolutely amazing!

I couldn't have done this without you all!

Finishing a marathon isn't just an athletic achievement. It's a state of mind.
A state of mind says anything is possible.
 - John Hanc, running writer

I vividly remember seeing these signs in neon pink words on a black background that people held up in the last half of the run...

YOU seek
YOU dream
YOU commit
YOU train
YOU preserve
YOU feel
YOU inspire
YOU FINISH.

What Separates the Good from the Great?

The 212° concept is one of the most powerful communication ideas.

If you're not familiar, here's the idea:
At 211 degrees...water is hot.
At 212 degrees...it boils.
And with boiling water, comes steam.
And steam can power a locomotive.
And, it's that one extra degree that...
Makes all the difference.
So many times, in business and in life, it's that one extra degree of effort that separates the good from the great.
What I love about the 212° idea is that you can use it to fit your own needs. It may be 212° service that you'd like to reinforce, or 212° attitude, leadership, or quality. Or maybe, you'll choose to build your entire culture around the 212° concept...to differentiate you from your competition.
The real beauty of 212° is the simplicity of the idea. Once explained...everybody gets it. And once you get it...it's hard to forget!

My Running Journey

I found this great video that reminds me of my running journey. I first started out with my first 10K run in April 2010, to a 1/2 marathon in June and now working my way up to a full marathon this year!

It's now exactly a month away from running my first full marathon...a total of 42K on Sunday, May 1, 2011 at the BMO Vancouver Marathon http://www.bmovanmarathon.ca/. I'm excited! It's not only about achieving the goal of finishing a a full marathon for me, it's also about enjoying the journey. Through the training, the forever friendship, the laughter, the pain, the commitment, the determination, the encouragement, the achievement, the teamwork...this one is dedicated to my running buddies Yvonne, Mike, Trevor and Denis and also to all of you who have supported me with encouraging comments on Facebook, Twitter, directly to me and spiritually. You all are making this one of the most unforgettable experience!

I love every quote in the video so I'd thought I'd write them down below:

Running changed my life as it will change yours, just give it a chance. Once you get that blood moving, it's show time! - Wilfredo Melendez, US soldier

Success means having the courage, the determination, and the will to become the person you believe you were meant to be. - George Sheehan

The body does not want you to do this. As you run, it tells you to stop but the mind must be strong. You always go too far for your body. You must handle the pain with strategy. It's not age, it's not diet. It's the will to succeed.

We may train or peak for a certain race, but running is a lifetime sport. - Alberto Salazar, American runner and coach

I've learned that finishing a marathon isn't just an athletic achievement. It's a state of mind. A state of mind says anything is possible. - John Hanc, running writer

Pain is nothing compared to what it feels to quit.

Some people dream about success...While others wake up and work hard at it.

Sun is delicious. Rain is refreshing. Wind braces us up. Snow is Exhilarating.

There's really no such thing as bad weather. Only different kinds of good weather.

Running is one of the best solutions to clear a mind.

Every run is a great run!

Give it everything you got!... because in the end, it's all worth it!

You can do anything when you put your mind to it. If you have any fears or doubts...forget about and just do it! Don't ever let somebody tell you that you can't do something. You want something, you go get it!

Maldives Island

I find it so facinating to see what different countries visit my blog. Some places I've never heard of before.
One day I saw Maldives pop up and I had to Google to find out where this place was located. It turns out to look like an amazing place I may want to visit one day.

Here's a bit of a description about the islands:

The Maldives are a group of islands totalling 1190! Most of these islands are not inhabited and are very small. Out of all of them, only around 200 are inhabited and out of these many of them are exclusively tourists’ resorts. It is located in the southern part of the Indian ocean about 400 miles south west of India.

Characteristics
If you are a person who loves the open seas and enjoys crystal clear waters, then visiting the Maldives is a must. The islands are made up of coral reefs which give it excellent scuba diving opportunities. Because of its geographic location, which is not far from the equator, the weather is predictably tropic. The beaches can boast of sparkling white sand and palm laced water fronts. All of the islands sit atop an atoll. Religions such as Buddhism and Islam exist side by side.

The Climb

Music and inspirational lyrics always keeps me on the go and motivated. I love the lyrics to this song as it's so true in life so I've captured it below.

I can almost see it
That dream I am dreaming
But there's a voice inside my head saying
"You'll never reach it"

Every step I'm taking
Every move I make feels
Lost with no direction
My faith is shaking

But I gotta keep trying
Gotta keep my head held high

There's always gonna be another mountain
I'm always gonna wanna make it move
Always gonna be a uphill battle
Sometimes I'm gonna have to lose

Ain't about how fast I get there
Ain't about what's waiting on the other side
It's the climb

The struggles I'm facing
The chances I'm taking
Sometimes might knock me down
But no, I'm not breaking

I may not know it
But these are the moments that
I'm gonna remember most, yeah
Just gotta keep going

And I, I got to be strong
Just keep pushing on

'Cause there's always gonna be another mountain
I'm always gonna wanna make it move
Always gonna be a uphill battle
Sometimes I'm gonna have to lose

Ain't about how fast I get there
Ain't about what's waiting on the other side
It's the climb, yeah!

There's always gonna be another mountain
I'm always gonna wanna make it move
Always gonna be an uphill battle
Somebody's gonna have to lose

Ain't about how fast I get there
Ain't about what's waiting on the other side
It's the climb, yeah!

Keep on moving, keep climbing
Keep the faith, baby
It's all about, it's all about the climb
Keep the faith, keep your faith, whoa

 Climb
